We have been working since 2008 with scientists and researchers from around the world to reach a consensus on the definition of ectodermal dysplasia and to develop a classification system for isolated and syndromic types of ectodermal dysplasias.

A manuscript of this work was published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics in January, 2019: Ectodermal Dysplasias: Classification and Organization by Phenotype, Genotype and Molecular Pathway

Our experts refined and developed a working definition of what is an ectodermal dysplasia. The definition reads: ectodermal dysplasias are genetic conditions affecting the development and/or homeostasis of two or more ectodermal derivatives, including hair, teeth, nails, and certain glands.
